Panda Panda Panda!!! Goal 30 & 41 – DONE!

Oct 21st, 2015. Volunteered for a day at the panda reserve near Chengdu, China. I got to cleaned their cages, and fed them. At the end of the day, a pic with the cutest baby panda cub!!

Progress Report: June 2014

Goal #7. Dine at Noma (Chef René Redzepi), Copenhagen, Denmark.

Noma has reclaimed the no.1 restaurant in the world title this year.

Third time’s the charm. Got out of bed at 3am to book a table at Noma. I’ve learned from past experience. You have to be at the booking site just a little bit before it opens and they assign you a random number in line to get in. I was the 135th person to get in. Phew! There were more than a 1200 people in line! I was so excited, I couldn’t fall back asleep for a long time! 

The reservation is for September 10, 2014, which means I have to go to the EuroSense Conference in Copenhagen. I just hope the presentation proposal gets accepted.

Goal # 16 – Learn Thai Massage  – COMPLETED May 9th, 2014

It was an intense 5 day. At least 8 hrs a day of class, and then another couple of hours of practice every night.

Goal #27: Give Thai massage to at least 5 people (for free). – COMPLETED June 6th, 2014.

I have actually given massage 6 times to 5 people, including my masseuse, as I wanted some professional feedback. It seems that everyone really liked it. My masseuse even offered me to work at her place. I’m seriously considering it!

Giving a Thai massage is actually hard work. In many ways, you’re helping the receive do yoga as you put them into many yoga poses. But at the same time, the practitioner is also doing a kind of therapeutic, yoga-like exercise. There is a neat little article in the American Massage Therapy Association website recently, which says, “Even though Thai massage requires specific physical strength, stamina and flexibility of the practitioner, the focus on good body mechanics, alignment, stretching with gravity, and mindful breath can actually help the practitioner develop the very qualities it requires. ”

Progress Report: April 2014

I can’t believe it’s been 2 years since I came up with the idea for this personal project. Which means that I only have 3 years left to accomplish everything!

So, since November 2013 (my last blog post), I have done the following:

Goal # 1 Visit all 50 states in the US

I went to have a very nice lunch with my college girlfriend in Wilmington, Delaware when I went to Philadelphia for the American Library Association Midwinter Conference. The food was good, and we felt really youthful there, because I think everyone else in that restaurant was over 80 years old.

Then in February, I went to Salt Lake City, Utah for the Qualtrics Summit. When I got there, I just rented a car drove to the border cities in Wyoming (Evanston) and Idaho (Malad City) and ate at two local restaurants. The waitress at the restaurant in Evanston, WY was fascinated by my story. Or maybe she was just bored. She recommended a fried chicken dinner which was delicious.

I only have 3 states left: Alaska, Montana, and Kentucky! And I already have a ticket to Kentucky that I need to use before August. So, it looks like this goal could be accomplished very soon. It’s quite unbelievable how many states I visited once I set this goal.

Not that I need any convincing anymore, but setting goals does work!

Goal 13. Get tenure

Looks like I have passed my 5th year review. I will go up for the final review in October this year. We shall see.

Goal 14. Give a kickass presentation

I co-presented a kickass presentation on “Persuasion” techniques at the I2C2 Conference in Manchester, U.K., in March. Credits go to my awesome co-presenters, Isabel Gonzalez-Smith and John Jung.

Goal 16. Learn Thai massage

Signed up for a one-week Thai Massage course at the Thai Institute of Healing Arts in Arlington, VA in May. Can’t wait!

Goal 29. Mentor someone

This is actually quite exciting. Two people have asked me to be their mentor. TWO! And two of the most awesome people too. Now that I have 2 proteges, I will need to come up with some wise advice. And try not to be like George Costanza.

Goal 34. Create a photo-essay or a video-essay (amended June, 2013)

Ok, this was completed when I made my first travelogue video. But it all started when I decided to make film 1 second of video everyday for a whole year. This project has really taught me patience. I am by nature an impatient person, but the beauty (or the frustration) of this project is, you cannot rush it. You can only add one second each day. It will take 365 days to finish it. It was hard at times, when I felt like it would never be completed. By my god, when it was finally done, it’s a glorious result. I literally love every second of it. And it’s amazing how just one second of video could trigger the memories of so much more. During the year, there were many amazing, happy moments, a few not so great ones. And a lot of yoga, traveling, football, and friends. It’s amazing how just one second of video can trigger my memory for that day. I do not want to forget a single day from now.

And ladies and gentlemen, here is my entire year (41st birthday to 42nd birthday) in one-second moments.

Goal 37. Be able to do splits

It took me over 2 years to finally get into hanumanasana. It really is a great feeling to accomplish a goal after working on it for so long. It’s funny that I had this idea in my head way back in late 2011, that if I could the splits when I was 40, that would mean that I would be in the best shape of my life because I had never been able to do that. My original goal was to be able to do that by the end of 2012, which obviously didn’t happen. It’s funny that it’s this silly desire to get into the splits that led me to yoga, which has transformed my life in so many ways.

Goal #28: Give money to RadioLab

I always make sure that I have several RadioLab podcasts on my ipod whenever I have to drive long distance. While listening to music is fine for a couple of hours, a RadioLab episode can make the journey seem so much shorter.

For those of you who don’t know, Radiolab is a radio program produced by WNYC, a public radio station in New York City, and uses compelling storytelling to discuss scientific and philosophic topics. They explore big ideas and ask big questions about how the world works. But honestly it’s much more fun and interesting than my lame descriptions. The more I listen to them, the I marvel at their storytelling techniques. You are engaged from the first minute to the last. I cannot remember a single less than wonderful episode. Oh how I wish  my old science teachers were this good at arousing interests in science!

If you have never listened to RadioLab, here is an episode called Falling ( love the part about falling cats 🙂 about 23mins in):

RadioLab is a non-profit that is supported by listeners. Every time I listen, I always tell myself that I must send them money to support them. And I always forget. I really don’t consider myself a charitable person by any standard. If I can get something for free, I make sure I get it for free (and possibly more of it, for free). But with this amazing program, I am actually moved to want to give them money even when I absolutely don’t have to. The desire grew even more after this lovely Chris and Lisa episode (embedded below):

“Chris had a crush on Lisa. But how to woo her? He met her on a park bench in Chicago, handed her a stack of CD’s, and sent her off on an extremely specific mission. Did it work?”

When I was coming up with my 45things list, I knew this had to be on it. So, Goal #28 is to give money to RadioLab at least once a year. Today (11th December, 2012), I signed up to send money to them every month, which will hopefully continue way beyond my 45th birthday. I want them to keep making this wonderful program.

I am trusting that the auto debit from my bank account will work for the next 4+ years, so I am considering this goal completed. Yay! My first completed goal!
