My recipe for professional happiness

My recipe for professional happiness

Convention wisdom says don’t mix business with pleasure. I couldn’t disagree with it more. Mixing business and pleasure doesn’t mean sacrificing professionalism. Pleasure doesn’t mean doing nothing. (As you can see from my 45things list. I get so much pleasure from actively doing things). To me, it simply means integrating my authentic self into my work, and being professionally productive while I’m not officially “at work”. I actively combine my “professional life” and my “personal life” as much as possible because I want just one life. I have a limited amount of time and energy. The way to maximize my return (whether it is professional accomplishments, personal goals or simply “happiness”) is by achieving multiple objectives with a single action. ย As explained in this Harvard Business Review blog post,ย the goal is never to be idle…The goal is to spend as much time possible doing what we want. Mixing business and pleasure makes sense.

  1. I love this Leo – what a great idea. ๐Ÿ™‚ I frequently develop my best ideas while traveling (granted, it’s usually just to Nebraska, but still…) and I can mix business & pleasure when I am trying – maybe I just need to try more. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for sharing the HBR blog post too – good stuff.

    1. Me too! Traveling (even business travel) is such a great way to stimulate the mind. That’s why I love going to conferences. ๐Ÿ™‚

I really like that HBR blog post. I’m now very interested reading that 4 hour work week book.
